Breast Reconstruction with Dr. Kye Higdon

Th the world of medical progress, the discussion about breast reconstruction showcases how advanced plastic surgery can truly change lives. We recently had an informative conversation with highly respected plastic surgeon, Dr. Higdon. Our talk dived into the details of breast reconstruction, which is a significant process that combines creativity, scientific knowledge, and emotional recovery. This blog post summaries some of the highlights of our conversation.

Radiation and Reconstruction

The need for radiation treatment must be considered in the reconstruction decision-making process. Implants, breast-conserving techniques, and flap surgeries (such as DIEP, SGAP, etc.) remain viable options even after radiation. Typically, plastic surgeons prefer to wait until radiation therapy is complete before jointly deciding with the patient on the reconstruction approach.

Implants in the News

Smooth implants present a considerably safer choice in comparison to textured implants. They are regulated by the FDA and currently represent the most common form of reconstruction. Dr Higdon pointed out there are numerous factors to consider when making the decision about placing the implants over or under the muscle.

Revisions

Revisions can be carried out using fat grafting and other methods, even several years post-reconstruction. These procedures are often covered by insurance when reconstruction has been necessitated by breast cancer.  Be sure to look at your health policy and/or your rights outlined in the federal Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) of 1998.

Scars Post-Recovery

Scarring risk factors vary. Collaborating with your plastic surgeon, you can explore diverse strategies to promote healing and manage existing scars!

Breast Conserving Therapy

Plastic surgeons have multiple options to assist patients in preserving as much of their natural breast tissue as possible without compromising negative margins.

Thank you, Dr. Higdon for your time!!

With honesty and strength, Sharon reflects on how BRA’s program components supported her through treatment and helped her step into this next chapter with confidence and community. Her words say it best: “You might have cancer, but cancer does NOT have you.” This recorded conversation is personal, powerful, and rooted in hope.
